The English saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings releases today Wisdom of Elders, his first album under his new band Shabaka & the Acestors.
Shabaka is very busy. This year, he was nominated for the famous Mercury Prize with his trio Comet Is Coming.
In 2015 in Johannesburg, he joins up a group of South African musicians led by trumpeter Mandla Mlangeni and recorded, in only one day, a very poetic album.
“ For me, the leader of the project isn’t the person who writes all the music but the one who has a vision for how certain musical elements will be combined.” Shabaka Hutchings
The album is what Hutchings calls Afro-futurism, with the influence of Sun Ra strong in the mix, though the group also blends South Africa’s heritage with New Orleans inspirations.
We highly recommend you this album released today on Brownswood Recordings, the prestigious imprint of Gilles Peterson.
